In World War II England, the quiet village of Sitting Marsh is faced with food rations and fear for loved ones. The residents depend on Elizabeth Hartleigh Compton, lady of the manor house, who stubbornly insists that life must go on. Then, after she quells their fears about having a munitions factory in the village, the factory explodes-killing owner Douglas McNally.
