The children are gone from a supermarket. Six year old Mary Frances and three year old Fip belong, or did belong, to Callie Hallard who had had a breakdown a year or so ago and still goes to a therapist on Fridays when she has to use babysitters. One of them is sicker than she is-- lost in the past of the babies she'd once taken care of who have now outgrown her.
