Cole, Kathryn. (Author). Leng, Qin. (Added Author). Boost Child & Youth Advocacy Centre. (Added Author).

It seems like every kid in Dee-Dee's class has joined a club but her. It's not that she doesn't want to join a club, it's that no one will let her! Because of her disability, she doesn't walk fast enough for the walking club and the Strong-Arm Wrestling Club became the All-Boys Strong-Arm Wrestling Club when she beat Joseph easy-peasy in a match. Dee-Dee knows that friends shouldn't leave you out and that she is a very good friend. So she and her teacher come up with a plan to show what good friends are and how they should treat each other.

Dee-Dee is a young African American girl with a disability who meets with a series of rejections on the school playground. When she overhears two girls talking about a new walking club, Dee-Dee asks to join but is told the crutch she uses would make her too slow. Then she finds out that the boys have an arm wrestling club. Her left arm is especially strong from manipulating her crutch, and she easily beats a boy in an arm wrestling match. But a no-girls-allowed policy keeps her out of this club, too. After arbitrary rules keep her from joining the pet-sitter's club as well, Dee-Dee is stunned to realize that kids can be so unkind and exclusionary. This leads her, with the aid of her teacher, to form a friendship club where everyone is welcome. The illustrations, showing a diverse group of children, underscore the point that everyone belongs. This book in the I'm a Great Little Kid will encourage kids to find positive solutions to problems and act with kindness.--Fletcher, Connie Copyright 2016 Booklist

K-Gr 3-The second round of books in this series demonstrate how children can speak up about sensitive and hard to talk about topics. Cole tackles the subjects of friendship, the difference between tattling on someone and getting help, and identifying appropriate and inappropriate touching between adults and children. The delicate issues covered in each book are presented in relatable and useful ways that will allow children to connect and find solutions for troublesome situations that they may encounter. Leng employs great identity and ethnic diversity in the cast of characters through bright, expressive, and simple illustrations perfect for young readers. VERDICT This series is ideal for character education in any setting or as part of a teacher/parent resource collection for introducing problem-solving skills to young learners.-Nikitia Wilson, Convent of the Sacred Heart School Library, New York © Copyright 2016.
