Gr. 10 and up. That abuse is about power and dependency, not about love, becomes evident when we read the candid firsthand accounts (two from young abused women, one from a mother who watched her daughter in a destructive relationship) that lead off this support-information book, published by a company dedicated to women's issues. Levy, a California therapist, deals forthrightly with the physical, emotional, and sexual abuse that sometimes occurs during a long-term dating relationship. Abuse sufferers are her target audience (though there is a short chapter for victimizers), and she speaks straight to them, stressing they are not to blame for their situations. Presented without professional jargon and larded with personal comments from abuse victims, her text explains what constitutes "addictive love" and abuse and how to cope, all the while cognizant of the difficulties involved in breaking the dependency cycle. There's no documentation, but the book may well serve as a reasonable first step toward recognizing destructive love and thereby beginning the process of retaking control of one's own life. ~--Stephanie Zvirin
