In the summer of 1914 Beatrice Nash arrives in Rye to replace the Latin master. She is mourning the death of her father and wishes to be left to her teaching and writing, but as she comes alive to the beauty of the Sussex landscrape and it's people, its inhabitants prepare to face war.
