Orq the caveboy and his pet woolly mammoth, Woma, return in a story that suggests that bullying is as old as time. Things aren't easy for Orq and his family ("Cave life tough. Cold cave. Dark night. Raw bison"), but constant torments from an older boy, Dorq, and his vicious bearlike pet, Caba, drive Orq to the breaking point. Elliott's halting cave-speak and Nichols's expressive cartooning make for some very funny scenes, and Orq's accidental discovery of fire solves all of his problems (including the raw bison one) in one fell swoop. Ages 4-8. Author's agent: Kelly Sonnack, Andrea Brown Literary Agency. Illustrator's agent: Joanna Volpe, New Leaf Literary & Media. (Sept.)? © Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved.

K-Gr 2-This second installment about Orq is rich in humor. The young caveboy and his trusty mammoth Woma have fun every day, despite the hardships of cave life. Perhaps their biggest challenge of all is dealing with bullies Dorq and Caba. Dorq is everything Orq is not-big, hairy, and strong. He's also greedy and mean. Orq and Woma are fast, but not always fast enough to escape their tormentors. One day, in anger and frustration, Orq pretends: "This rock Dorq. This rock Caba." As he bangs them together repeatedly, he accidentally creates fire in the process. He has the last laugh and wins the day. "Orq everybody's hero. Warm cave. Night light. Bison burgers! Yum!" VERDICT Recommended for all collections, especially libraries where This Orq: (He Cave Boy) (2014) has a particular fan base.-Ashley Prior, Lincoln Public Library, RI © Copyright 2015. Even in prehistoric times, a pet is a boy's best friend and a bully, his worst enemy. "This Orq. He cave boy," begins the story, told in the broken sentence snippets of B-movies about prehistoric times. A caramel-colored woolly mammoth named Woma is his constant companion; they stack turtles together like blocks. Orq is kind of a runt next to the community bully, Dorq, who never misses a chance to display his superior strength. "Orq catch lunch. Dorq eat lunch." As Orq has Woma, Dorq has a big, gray Tasmanian devil-like pet called Caba, as mean as he is ugly. This duo taunts Orq and Woma at every turn. They even destroy Orq's turtle fort. One day, when they're hunting, Woma and Orq find a big beetle, a large lizard, a tremendous turtle, and...Dorq and Caba. Orq and Woma run fast but not fast enough. Caba throws a giant egg onto Woma's head, and Orq sees red. In his rage, he grabs two rocks and pounds them repeatedly. The sparks from this action ignite a nearby pile of sticks. Orq has inadvertently invented fire! He also scares away Dorq and Caba. Best of all, Orq becomes everybody's hero. There's abundant drollery in both Elliott's terse text and Nichols' mischievous pictures. As a bonus, there's a count-the-turtles challenge. Wacky and well-tuned to the preschool sense of humor. In this second book featuring cave boy Orq and woolly mammoth Woma, the Paleolithic pals live in fear of bruiser Dorq and his (unclassifiable) pet, Caba. When the bullies push Orq to the breaking point, he smashes rocks together, discovering fire and becoming a hero. Caveman-style prose ("Now Orq angry.") will amuse many young listeners; Nichols's digitally-colored pencil drawings strengthen the humor. (c) Copyright 2016. When we first met Orq and Woma, cave boy and woolly mammoth best buddies, in This Orq. (He Cave Boy.) (2014), Orq's mother was on the fence about the destructive pet. But Woma proved his worth, and the rest was happily ever after until now. Neighborcave bully Dorq hairy, strong, and merciless has his crosshairs on Orq, with the able assistance of his own BFF, saber-toothed tiger Saba. Orq and Woma are set upon and tormented, until Orq loses his cool and discovers fire in the process. The day is saved, the bison is cooked, and everyone (bullies aside) ends up happy. Elliott's wry narration is just as fun as in the earlier outing, affecting cave-speak with missing pronouns and articles (Orq catch lunch. / Dorq eat lunch). And Nichols' affectionate cartoon drawings, with dynamic compositions and expressive faces, add to the humor and heart. Here's hoping Orq and Woma have more cavely adventures in store.--Barthelmess, Thom Copyright 2015 Booklist
