In June 1989, Chinese students, teachers, and workers gathered in Beijing's Tiananmen Square. The government responded by sending troops and tanks to quell the protest. One indelible image sums up that moment in time. The photo, taken by AP journalist Jeff Widener, shows a broad, empty street where a man stands in the way of a line of tanks. In this book from the new Captured World History series, Burgan offers a concise, clearly written account of events before, during, and after the June demonstrations as well as a riveting story of how Widener came to take the photo. Similar in design to books in the publisher's Captured History series, this handsome volume features spacious page design and many captioned photos. An interesting perspective on a single photo and its historical context.--Phelan, Carolyn Copyright 2014 Booklist

Gr 6 Up-This outstanding follow-up to Capstone's "Captured History" series continues the same format, focusing on a single, emblematic photograph that defines an era or event. Authors combine the stories of the photographs with the events they portray, including details about the photographer and the circumstances in which the image was taken. The photo and the event are placed into historical context, with analysis of both its immediate and continuing impact. The books contain plenty of background information and are exceptionally attractive, with numerous large photos that form a visual record of the subject and sidebars that offer details about related topics. This set will show students how a single image can "capture" history and influence the perceptions and actions of those who see it. The books will certainly draw a large readership and are must-buys for all middle-level and secondary collections. (c) Copyright 2014. Analyzing visual images and setting them in a larger historical and cultural context is an important skill. In this volume Burgan uses the iconic photograph of a Tiananmen Square protester facing down a tank to discuss the 1989 student protest in China and the Communist government's violent retaliation. A spacious page design, which includes plenty of photos, enhances the presentation. Reading list, timeline. Bib., glos., ind. (c) Copyright 2014.
