Expat Grossman, a New Yorker who lives in Paris, shares recipes for jelly doughnuts, blintzes, noodle kugels, Italian-style cheesecakes, and other iconic provisions he misses while abroad. He organizes these loosely by time of day (coffee time, brunch time, any time), an amusing choice that makes sense unless you're hunting specifically for desserts, sandwiches, or other recipe categories that span multiple chapters. Illustrations of New York City locales and businesses give the book a strong sense of place and help to tie less overtly "New York" recipes (e.g., cherry pie, s'mores, hot oatmeal, and roast chicken) to the central theme. Overall, the book feels very true to American culinary traditions and trends so much so that this reviewer was surprised to learn it was first published in France and Australia. VERDICT Featuring a fresh design and doable recipes for many of America's favorite comfort foods, this cookbook will make a great gift for anyone who loves New York. (c) Copyright 2014.
