K-Gr 1-In this barnyard romp, the sheep is a prankster and his unsuspecting farm fellows fall victim to his April Fools' jokes. He tampers with the rooster's alarm clock, bakes a cardboard cake for Pig, and plays connect-the-dots with poor Cow's spots. When the horse slyly offers Sheep a haircut to help cool him off, the sheep's the one who's fooled. It's the animals' turn to yell, "April Fools" when his new 'do turns out to be a buzz cut of the poodle variety. Those looking for a book of harmless pranks to share with a young audience will appreciate Wright's simple rhyming text and Ratz de Tagyos's colorful, comedic illustrations.-Jenna Boles, Greene County Public Library, OH (c) Copyright 2013. Mischievous Sheep can't resist a good prank on April Fool's Day, and the farmyard is in chaos--he sets Rooster's clock for the wrong time and frosts an empty box so Pig will think it's a cake. But he gets his comeuppance when Horse shears him to look like a poodle. Jolly illustrations aptly reflect the bouncy rhyming text's simple humor. (c) Copyright 2013. Sheep's exuberance is infectious as he claps his hooves together on April Fools' Day and exclaims, It's time to have some fun! First up on the pranking list is Rooster. Sheep sets Rooster's alarm clock one hour ahead and, after the wake-up call, shouts April Fools! and laughs his head off, while Rooster plants his wings on his hips. Next up for April One ( I've only just begun! ) is a prank on hungry Dog. When he stumbles upon his favorite canned food, and three snakes jump out, Sheep is beside himself with glee, while Dog barks in fear. And so it goes, as each animal is tricked in turn. But the last laugh is on Sheep, who agrees to a haircut at the hands of Horse. The rest of the barnyard crew guffaws it up as Horse sheers and shapes Sheep's wool until he resembles a poodle. The rhyming text is simple and reads aloud well, while the illustrations, rendered in marker, showcase some very expressive animals. A playful look at being on the delivering and receiving end of an April Fools' joke.--Kelley, Ann Copyright 2010 Booklist
