Holocaust Literature

As the publisher's note to Holocaust Literature observes, the survivors of this horrific genocide are aging and passing away, and it is the literature of survivors, poets, philosophers, and others that will remain and serve as a constant reminder. This reference work, part of the Magill's Choice series, discusses more than 100 literary works and also contains a list of concentration camps, a chronology, and a general bibliography. Some of the entries originally appeared in other Salem publications such as Masterplots II: World Fiction Series (1987) and World Philosophers and Their Works (2000). Around a quarter of the entries are new. The strength of this text is the currency of items selected. Alongside such classics as The Diary of a Young Girl (1952) and Night (1960) are more current texts, such as Ian Kershaw's Hitler (2000) and James Carroll's Constantine's Sword (2001). Enemies (1972), by Isaac Bashevis Singer, is an excellent example of a typical entry, listing the author, publication information (original language and when translated into English), genre, and principle characters. This is followed by an overview and a list of titles to consult for further study; in the entry for Enemies, there are 12 titles. The overview discusses both historical context and themes, making it an excellent tool for a high-school or undergraduate student. The genre, title, and author indexes at the end of volume 2 simplify locating a work. There are several other more comprehensive resources on the subject of Holocaust literature, among them Routledge's Holocaust Literature: An Encyclopedia of Writers and Their Works (2002) and Gale's Reference Guide to Holocaust Literature (2002). The Salem set would be a good choice for public and high-school libraries, especially where other titles on Holocaust literature are not owned.--Mastel, Kristen Copyright 2008 Booklist
