Falling hard for the royal guard

Clawson, Megan. (Author).

From her bedroom in the Tower of London, twenty-six-year-old Maggie has always dreamed of her own fairy-tale ending. Yet this is twenty-first century London, so instead of knights on white horses, she has catfish on Tinder. And with her last relationship ending in spectacular fashion, she swears off men for good. And then a chance encounter with Royal Guard Freddie forces Maggie to admit that she isn't ready to give up on love just yet. But how do you catch the attention of someone who is trained to ignore all distractions? Can she snare that true love's first kiss...or is she royally screwed?

TikTok phenom Clawson draws from personal experience to take readers inside modern life in the Tower of London in her slow-burning debut romance. As the daughter of a beefeater, Maggie Moore, 26, is one of a tight-knit community living in the tower. Quirky and self-assured, Maggie sustains herself on her obsession with British history, Tower ghost stories, and romance novels. But she's also struggling after a devastating breakup and in the face of cruel daily harassment by her boss and coworkers in her dead-end job selling tickets to Tower tourists. Then she (literally) bumps into Freddie Guilford, a gorgeous royal guard who looks like one of the characters from her romance novels. Though she's sworn off relationships, Maggie is immediately love-struck. For his part, Freddie, the scion of a powerful family, wants to carve out a path for himself unrelated to his family's pedigree and can't afford distractions. As Freddie fights his feelings for Maggie, Maggie works to get the unflappable guard's attention and Clawson dispenses plenty of genuine Tower history lessons. Readers will be charmed. (May)

DEBUT Twenty-six-year-old Maggie Moore is in a bit of a rut in every facet of her life. Living with her Beefeater father at the actual Tower of London seems like it could be the basis of a fairy tale. Instead, she's employed at a dead-end job selling entry tickets to the castle to annoying tourists. Maggie can't seem to avoid making mistakes worthy of a blooper reel, including fending off her clingy ex-boyfriend and showing up tardy to work, in full view of the guards, security cameras, and ravens. When Freddie Guildford, a handsome Grenadier Guard, is stationed at the Tower, Maggie is smitten. She instantly falls in step with the jovial members of the regiment who encourage her to ignore him and step up her Tinder game, but she still can't seem to shake her crush on Freddie. VERDICT The unusual setting provides a great history lesson and a peek at life behind the scenes at a world-renowned landmark. However, popular TikToker Clawson (who also lives in the Tower of London with her Beefeater father) doesn't break any new ground with the novel or the characters.--Nicole J. Suarez
