The Civil War is over and the soldiers have come home. Carl Novak isn't the only veteran in his hometown of Wolf Creek, Texas, but he is the only one who fought for the Union. Still, it hasn't been an issue for most of the people in town. They know that Carl is a good man whose choice was driven by strongly held beliefs. Most folks just want to put the war behind them--most folks... But there are some for whom the wounds still fester, and they are seeking revenge. When they murder Carl's beloved wife, they leave his ten-year-old daughter, Lucy, so traumatized that she won't speak. Leaving her with friends, Carl sets out to track down the killers, but he's about to find out that there are many roads to revenge.
