The Welland Ship Canal was a major Canadian infrastructure project. The works engaged 4,000 workers at its peak, with many thousands more having been employed at various times during its two decades of construction. This "great national project”, this triumph of Canadian engineering, was also marked by tragedy. A staggering 137 men lost their lives as a result of accidents that occurred during the construction - one of the largest losses of life in the history of Canadian government infrastructure projects. TRIUMPH AND TRAGEDY: The Welland Ship Canal profiles each of the fallen workers. It sheds light on the construction work, its immensity, and its diversity. Touching upon the communities impacted by the works, the construction railway, and the problems of health and safety, this book brings together in one source the many aspects of this engineering marvel. This book will ensure that the men who lost their lives during the course of the work will not remain just nameless, forgotten workers. They came from all walks of life. They were young, old, married, single, born in Canada and recent immigrants. Some were veterans of the First World War. Others were engineers, electricians, carpenters, labourers, a water boy, and many more. The stories of their lives provides an insight into our past" -- https://www.stcatharines.ca/en/experiencein/resources/Culture/Triumph-and-Tragedy-Pre-sale-rack-card-small.pdf
