Pastor Roberts (Don't Settle for Safe) delivers a powerful guide to the lessons found in the story of Eve. She describes Eve as a woman characterized by discipline, creativity, and stability who was "empowered to continuously evolve because she's fascinated by how God will reveal His perfect plan and strength through her heart and hands." Roberts encourages Christian women to be willing to experience "uncomfortable vulnerability," to surrender, and to trust God's plan. She also challenges readers to ask questions, be unconventional by making choices based on interest and passion, and admit when they need help, and warns that women often face more obstacles than men and shouldn't reject opportunities due to feelings of inadequacy. Throughout, she reminds readers that doing the right thing isn't always easy and offers insight on making tough choices: "The quicker you learn how to harness your power and balance who you are, the sooner you can get to the business of exploring the depths of the strength God has placed in you." Sections for "working it out" conclude each chapter, featuring open-ended questions ("What do you want to see in your life that you currently don't see?") and prompts for journaling. Evangelical Christians will want to take a look. (Apr.)

Christianity venerates Mary as the mother of Jesus, but its relationship with Eve is more complicated. In this latest work after Don't Settle for Safe, Roberts (founder of Woman Evolve Ministries, and daughter of megachurch pastor T.D. Jakes) draws parallels between the lives of modern women and the life of the biblical Eve. In the author's view, Eve is a woman who must recognize and evolve from the mistakes of the past in order to become the person she is meant to be. This is a particularly important archetype for Roberts, who became pregnant at age 13 and has had to navigate various unexpected life circumstances. Relying heavily on Scripture, each chapter features a "Working It Out" section, with exercises designed to help readers think about how they perceive themselves and whether their thoughts hold them back or propel them forward. VERDICT Roberts argues that Eve is a role model to be emulated because of her ability to move beyond her past and partner with God to create a hopeful future. Her words will draw in fellow Evangelical Christians who are navigating fear or insecurity.--Gail Eubanks, Univ. of Missouri, Springfield
