A prior's murder takes Quebec's Chief Inspector Armand Gamache and his sidekick, Inspector Jean-Guy Beauvoir, inside the walls of the monastery of Saint-Gilbert-Entre-les-Loupes. The Gilbertine order, long extinct except for the two dozen brothers who live on an island apart from the rest of the world, enforces silence on its members. In the absence of speech, a raised eyebrow or averted gaze can speak intense hostility. Now someone has found a new way to communicate such hostility: by bashing Frre Mathieu, the monastery's choirmaster and prior, over the head. I'm well aware of her reputation as a good citizen and a responsible member of Parliament, but trust me - you don't want to live in Ruth Rendell's neighborhood. Like her other urban teardowns, "Portobello" and "Tigerlily's Orchids," THE ST. ZITA SOCIETY (Scribner, $26) takes up residence in a picturesque London street and ever so slowly and delicately eviscerates the pretentious upper-middle-class residents behind its pseudo-Georgian facades. And lest anyone accuse this most cynical of satirists of sentimentalizing the lower orders, she turns and takes a bite out of these minions for adopting their masters' shabby values. The carnage begins in a pub called the Dugong, the meeting place of a newly formed association named after the patron saint of domestic help. The au pairs, nannies, maids, chauffeurs and live-in companions who attend the initial meetings have no specific agenda aside from taking in some shows and expressing "solidarity," but by the end of the story these loyal servants will instigate a series of reversals that add up to something of a palace coup. Many dramas play out on Hexam Place, most of them crossing the old class boundaries and not one of them predictable. It does seem obvious that weapons should be kept out of the hands of Dr. Jefferson's gardener, Dex, who has been talking to God on his cellphone ever since he was let out of an asylum for the criminally insane. But what about the comic farce involving Henry, the handsome chauffeur being pursued by both Lord Studley's wife and his daughter? Or the heartbreaking tale of Rabia, the devout Muslim nanny who has transferred her love for her dead infants to her professional charges? And what could threaten the companionable relationship between the 82-year-old "Princess" Hapsburg and her 78-year-old maid - or any of the other "Upstairs, Downstairs" alliances? As often happens in Rendell's novels of psychological suspense, characters are undone by their own obsessions. But these meltdowns are executed with such stealth and subtlety that the psychic cracks aren't visible - until suddenly they are. So there will be blood and tears, but in unexpected quarters. Ever perverse, Rendell will snatch happiness from the nicest character and give some lowlife another chance. But let's be fair: she won't let anyone get away with murder. Louise Penny has written an original variation on the "no exit" whodunit in THE BEAUTIFUL MYSTERY (Minotaur, $25.99) by dispatching Chief Inspector Armand Gamache of the Sûreté du Québec to a remote lake where a cloistered order of monks, thought to have been wiped out in the Inquisition, have been furtively living in the abbey of Saint-Gilbert-Entretes-Loups. The 24 Gilbertines, handpicked for their exceptional voices, observe a strict rule of silence among themselves but pray together as a choir, singing the ancient Gregorian chants they believe to be "the word of God sung in the voice of God." As one of the monks puts it, "We don't just sing, we are the song." This existential harmony shatters when the prior of the abbey, who is also the choirmaster, is found beaten to death in the abbot's private garden, the upshot of a deep schism over preserving the strict abbey traditions or lifting the rule of silence so the choir can share their music with the rest of the world - and make a lot of money. Penny writes with grace and intelligence about complex people struggling with complex emotions. But her great gift is her uncanny ability to describe what might seem indescribable - the play of light, the sound of celestial music, a quiet sense of peace. Anne Perry's Victorian mysteries are marvels of plot construction. Her novels about William Monk of the Thames River Police are especially tricky because they're set in the Dickensian darkness of midcentury London and are written in a hybrid form that's part police procedural and part courtroom drama. Now, with the murder, the doors of the monastery are opened to Chief Inspector Armand Gamache and Inspector Jean-Guy Beauvoir, charged with finding a killer among a group of largely silent monks, who, it quickly becomes apparent, are engaged in a civil war over their music, but one fought with glances and small gestures until now, when rocks have been added to the arsenal. P. D. James, of course, has made a career out of taking her sleuth, Adam Dalgliesh, into closed worlds to investigate murders, and while Penny follows that formula, she layers her plots more intricately than does James, this time adding an entire contrapuntal plot concerning Gamache, Beauvoir, their relationship, the secrets each conceals, and the demons each continues to fight. The deepest passions could appear dispassionate, the face a smooth plain while something mammoth roiled away underneath, Gamache thinks, expressing not only his frustration with the case but, inadvertently, the coming crisis in his relationship with Beauvoir. Of course, there is always something mammoth roiling away beneath the surface of Penny's novels but this time the roiling is set against the serenity of the chanting, producing a melody of uncommon complexity and beauty.
