Sinclair's eighth and exceedingly well-researched novel in the McTiernay saga features Dugan, a fearsome McTiernay commander who unwittingly falls for Adanel, the fiery redheaded daughter of an enemy clan to the north. Dugan discovers his perfect match when he accidentally encounters a beautiful woman bathing in a secluded loch who wants nothing more than to escape her unhappy life for a few hours in the passionate embrace of this handsome soldier's arms. No names are shared, and their weekly romantic liaisons are kept secret, but what should have been an uncomplicated arrangement turns deadly serious when Adanel's father, the evil Laird Mackbaythe, discovers her secret, locks her in a tower, and sends her brother to kill the McTiernay who supposedly impregnated his daughter. Mistaken identity, revenge, murder, and misunderstanding may lead to war if Dugan and Adanel cannot forge a union that will take down the corrupt Laird Mackbaythe and pacify the mistrustful northern clans. Once again, Sinclair delivers a heart-pounding romantic romp through the Scottish Highlands, a highly recommended read for fans of medieval romances.--Kristina Giovanni Copyright 2010 Booklist
