Through the fire

Ruggle, Katie. (Author).

Kit Jernigan despairs of ever fitting in with her new tight-knit K9 unit. They've been through too much to open their arms to a stranger-and as mysterious fires begin raging across Monroe, all fingers are pointed at her. Wesley March, local fire spotter, knows Kit isn't to blame, and he's willing to help her prove it. But the more time they spend together, the closer they get...and the more danger they're in. A member of the K9 unit's inner circle is determined to get revenge-no matter who gets burned in the process.

In the fourth novel in her Rocky Mountain K9 Unit series, following Survive the Night (2018), Ruggle tells the story of K9 officer Kit Jernigan, who is joining the force in Monroe, Colorado, with her tracking bloodhound, Justice. Kit soon realizes that her fellow officers are keeping secrets from her, mostly about the diner waitress Jules and her siblings. This gets more complicated when Justice tracks suspects to Jules' house. But before that, when Kit is trying to back her trailer into a snowy, narrow driveway, she is helped by a large, gorgeous man who turns out to be the fire-watch ranger. Wes is shy and awkward, but they are instantly attracted and romance follows, to the amazement of her fellow officers and Wes' nosy sister. There is less about the dog here, but Ruggle does wrap up a lot of mysteries that have surfaced in the series.--Mary K. Chelton Copyright 2018 Booklist
