Beloved in his home country of New Zealand, Sir Edmund Hillary (1919-2008) lived a full and exciting life. Best known for being the first man (along with Sherpa Tenzing Norgay) to summit Mt. Everest, in 1953, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II that same year. After Everest, he also took part in expeditions to the North and South poles, established the Himalayan Trust, and started a family. The man and his many achievements are respectfully filtered to present Hillary as both a hero and a competitive, insecure, often difficult man. Developed and produced by journalist friend and biographer Tom Scott, the six-part scripted drama features an outstanding cast of young actors (with Andrew Munro as Hillary) and visually stunning cinematography. Filmed primarily in New Zealand and Nepal, the miniseries follows Hillary from his early life as a rural beekeeper to the worldwide fame and personal tragedy that accompanied his celebrity. VERDICT This version of Hillary as an ordinary man who had extraordinary adventures is recommended for general audiences.-Linda Frederiksen, Emerita, Washington State Univ.
