Browne's debut starring his real-life pit bull (Marlo, 2017) featured the canine's underwater fantasy; this sequel sends the pooch back in time. The tale opens with the dog snoozing next to a grouping of houseplants. He snuggles a toy dinosaur. Two sentences launch the rest of the story, told almost entirely in pictures: "Marlo awoke from his afternoon nap to a very strange sight. / He decided to investigate." Looking across the gutter, he spies a small, winged creature carrying a bundle of twigs and disappearing into a newly sprouted living-room forest. A note on the copyright page had asked readers to help Marlo find both that animal and two tiny green beings. This hunt provides the motivation for and much of the fun in moving forward. Browne is adept at building surprises into his pen, watercolor, and digitally colored compositions. Varying perspectives display a vibrant world with fanciful trees and magenta or lavender beasts sporting decorative patterns. The going is calm among the herbivores, but the pace picks up when a gigantic carnivore appears, first seen only as a giant footits owner clearly towers over Marlo and the other dinos. The protagonist clings to a swift runner during the resultant stampede. When calm returns, the new friends use sticks gathered by the tiny green animals to build a rocket that propels Marlo home, where his last, bemused gaze is at readers from behind a fern.Entertaining in premise and execution, this is certain to inspire play among the pots. Readers are swept along on a nearly wordless adventure in Browne's imaginative account of Marlo the pit bull. Something very peculiar catches the brown pup's eye when he wakes up from his afternoon nap a small pink-and-green pterodactyl walking by with a bundle of sticks. Marlo creeps forward for a better look and finds that his living room now opens into a lush jungle where the pterodactyl is rapidly disappearing. Donning a red explorer's backpack, Marlo makes his way through the foliage and emerges onto a grassy ledge overlooking a vast prehistoric landscape dotted with dinosaurs. Over a series of double-page spreads, Marlo pursues the pterodactyl, which children will enjoy finding in each new scene. These wordless expanses are filled with activity and a variety of dinosaurs, and illustrated in inviting shades of purple, yellow, blue, and green. Youngsters can make up their own story as they go, but an ending twist will send them back to the beginning to search for clues carefully planted by Browne. A charming testament to the imagination.--Smith, Julia Copyright 2018 Booklist

Marlo awoke from his afternoon nap to a very strange sight." In pet dog Marlo's second (imagined) adventure (Marlo), his dinosaur toys inspire him to see and track an adorably odd-looking little dinosaur. The wordless spreads that follow transform Marlo's home into a leafy, dino-rich landscape in which sharp-eyed readers can enjoy hunting for Marlo's tour guide and two diminutive friends before he "returns" home. PreS-Gr 2-In this (almost) wordless picture book, Marlo the dog goes off on another amazing adventure. Waking from a nap, he sees a tiny pterosaur walking around with some sticks. Marlo decides to follow it, leaving behind the comfort of his home for prehistoric landscapes. Each spread features Marlo trying to catch the dinosaur against a different background, though keen eyes will find two other dinosaurs following along on Marlo's quest. Much like Aaron Becker's Journey, kids will love poring over each page of Browne's latest; the breathtaking vastness of each scene is matched only by the vivid details that make them come to life. In one such scene, Marlo chases his friend on the neck of a brontosaurus, a swamp teeming with life and predators placed beautifully behind them. Browne's artistic style is cartoonish and makes the piece lighthearted and fun, but is detailed enough to make the scope of the piece appear massive. Even without a guide to the dinos depicted, the variety and quantity of pictures will definitely satisfy. VERDICT Highly recommend for most collections.-Peter Blenski, Greenfield Public Library, WI © Copyright 2018. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. In his second adventure, Marlo-a liver-colored dog based on Browne's own pit bull-wakes from a nap (curled up with a toy dinosaur) to find a pterodactyl with a pink crest in his family's living room. The adventurous Marlo follows the visitor into a prehistoric landscape filled with other cartoonlike dinosaurs. Wearing a shirt, carrying a red backpack, and walking on two legs, Marlo calmly takes in the sights. In predominantly wordless spreads, Browne depicts jewel-toned dinosaurs of different sizes and species as they lumber along, lift their long necks to munch leaves, and flee a T-rex. Finally, Marlo forges an escape by building a wooden rocket ship, returning home just as his owner announces that it's time for a walk. Browne creates an enjoyable sense of commotion in his jungle scenes without making them overly cluttered. Marlo's escapades may leave readers fantasizing about what their own pets might get up to when no one is looking. Ages 4-8. Agent: Elena Giovinazzo, Pippin Properties. (Mar.) © Copyright PWxyz, LLC.
