It's D-Day, June 6, 1944, and among the thousands of American troops on the beach and behind enemy lines fighting the Nazi scourge in this alternative history are battle-hardened young women: Sergeant Rio Richlin, medic Frangie Marr, and intelligence-officer Rainy Schulterman. This their story, from just before the invasion to the liberation of the concentration camps and the girls' discharges. A narrator (identified at book's end) leads readers through the horrific and terrifying experience of being a soldier girl during one of America's most challenging wartime episodes, using their three distinct vantage points to create a fuller picture of the chaos and destruction. This concluding novel in the Front Lines series is compelling, sometimes-difficult reading that explores an alternate 1930s and '40s America where women are subject to the draft alongside men. There is back matter, including an author's note; a very short photo glossary of people, places, and war machinery; and a partial bibliography. This title could stand on its own, but readers will enjoy it more after reading Front Lines (2016) and Silver Stars (2017).--Welch, Cindy Copyright 2018 Booklist
