PreS-Gr 1-With one or two sentences facing a full-color photo, these titles provide brief glimpses into the world of modern-day agriculture, with a general emphasis on fairly large-scale harvesting operations. The writing ranges from engaging to banal. "They taste good" (Carrots) seems superfluous, while "The belt moves the cranberries from the bog to a truck" is informative. As resources, the books offer accurate information in both text and illustrations, and their small size and large typeface will appeal to beginning readers. Louise Spilsbury's titles in the "Food" series (Heinemann Library, 2001) offer more in-depth information at a reading level that is a bit more difficult.-Jody Kopple, Shady Hill School, Cambridge, MA (c) Copyright 2010.
