In this sweet, old-fashioned sequel to Will You Be My Friend? (2000), Bunny and Bird join Chipmunk and Squirrel in a snowy game of hide-and-seek. Bird finds the others, but Bunny hides so well, and for so long, that Bird begins to wonder if Bunny has run away. " ÂI would never run away,' responds Bunny, leaping out of a hollow log, ÂI am your friend.' " Children alert enough to notice that Bunny's log is visible in nearly every one of Tafuri's spacious, mildly colored winter scenes will have a good idea where he is all along. Carping critics may wonder how these creatures could run about in the snow without leaving tracks, but the tale's underlying warmth of tone is as enjoyable as the appealingly depicted wildlife. And the short, simply phrased, large-type text won't intimidate newer readers, either. (Picture book. 3-6)

Ages 2-4. Bunny and Bird, first seen in Will You Be My Friend? (2000), join their pals squirrel and chipmunk for a game of Hide and Seek. The trio finds snowy spots to hide from Bird-under a bush, in the hollow of a tree-and soon everyone except Bunny is found. When Bunny does not reappear, the animals wonder if their friend is angry and has run away. Perhaps he is lost? It's a relief when Bunny turns up: "I would never run away . . . . I am your friend." Both art and text are simple in the best sense of the word. The watercolor-and-ink illustrations have an easy definition of line, and what they lack in subtlety is made up for by their child-friendly ambience. Everything is big, easy to see, and comfortingly familiar. Save room for this in story hours that cater to the very young. -Ilene Cooper

PreS-K-Bunny and Bird are excited to see a whole field of new snow in which to play. Squirrel and Chipmunk can't resist the fun and join in a game of hide-and-seek. When none of the animals can find Bunny, Bird becomes worried that he doesn't want to be friends any more and has run away. Then Bunny bursts out of hiding to assure Bird that they are still best friends. This is a quiet, simple book that still manages to address such ideas as the fear of loss, loyalty, and the value of friendship. Soft illustrations create a cozy, safe world. Double-page spreads emphasize the pure joy the characters feel at the prospect of playing in the fresh, clean snow. An ideal choice for sharing with youngsters at bedtime or at storytime.-Alison Kastner, Multnomah County Library, Portland, OR (c) Copyright 2010. Bunny and Bird, who teamed up in Will You Be My Friend? are joined by Squirrel and Chipmunk for a game of winter hide-and-seek in Where Did Bunny Go? by Nancy Tafuri. Bunny, however, is too clever in his choice of a hiding place and, when Bird can't find him, the feathered fellow turns despondent until Bunny emerges from a log. Tafuri enhances the springtime setting with crisp illustrations befitting the season. ( Oct.) (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved

This second book about Bunny and Bird finds the two friends playing hide-and-seek with their animal companions. TafuriÃs soft watercolor and ink illustrations are well suited to the quiet, gentle text, capturing the animalsà frolic in their snowy meadow habitat. Simple, repetitive language makes the tale suitable for both toddlers and early readers. From HORN BOOK Spring 2002, (c) Copyright 2010.
