When book-restoration expert Brooklyn Wainwright temporarily relocates to her parents' place in Northern California, she finds that wooden barrels aren't the only things buried in the wine caves of Sonoma... Excited to explore the secrets of wine country, Brooklyn attends an excavation of the caves hidden deep under her parents' commune-and the findings are explosive. A room is unearthed, and it contains a treasure trove of artwork, rare books, a chest of jewelry ... and a perfectly mummified body. A closer examination of the murdered man's possessions reveals a valuable first edition of Jules Verne's A Journey to the Center of the Earth. Hidden in the book is a secret map that unveils an even greater hoard of treasures brought to California by French winemakers fleeing the Nazi invasion with the commune leader's grandfather, Anton, among them. As reporters and art appraisers flock to Sonoma to see the precious bounty, questions begin to rise-did Anton hide these items to protect them, or did he steal them for himself? Who is the mysterious man left for dead inside the cave? But not all crime is buried in the past. When a new presence threatens the town's peace, Brooklyn decides to do a little excavating of her own and solve the mystery of the treasure before anyone else is written off."

When Brooklyn Wainwright, a book restorer, visits her parents' commune to attend a wine tasting in a cave, the last thing she expects to find is a Jules Verne first edition that and a dead body. The leader of the commune identifies the victim as a friend of his grandfather's. Further investigation reveals more rare books, along with art, jewelry, and other valuables, as well as evidence suggesting that the various treasures were given by French families to be smuggled to America during WWII. As she works on restoring the books, Brooklyn seeks clues to the murder. Carlisle weaves fascinating history and details of book preservation into a well-crafted story. For Lorna Barrett fans (see review above).--Alessio, Amy Copyright 2015 Booklist

Rare book expert Brooklyn Wainwright knows as much about finding corpses as she does about books, as shown in Carlisle's uneven ninth bibliophile mystery (after 2014's The Book Stops Here). Brooklyn and her hunky boyfriend, English security expert Derek Stone, are in Dharma, Calif., when a cave is opened on the property of the Sonoma County winery run by the commune where Brooklyn's parents live. Not surprisingly, there's a body in the cave, the mummified remains of a Frenchman. What's more, the cave contains a treasure trove of European artwork transported to the U.S. in secret, as the French wanted to save it from the Nazis. Guru Bob, the commune leader, is the descendant of one of those French émigrés. Brooklyn turns sleuth when a threatening stranger arrives in Dharma. It's an intriguing setup, but the characters are mostly on the thin side, so it's hard to care what happens to them. It's the reader's choice whether all the New Age accoutrements are charming or a cause for eye-rolling. (June) © Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved.
