Gr 5 Up-This production highlights more than a dozen National Parks, memorials, and historic sites across the state of Pennsylvania, including Independence Hall; the Liberty Bell; Gettysburg; Valley Forge; the Flight 93, Johnstown Flood, and Thaddeus Kosciuszko national memorials; and the Eisenhower, Edgar Allan Poe, and Steamtown historic sites. At the respective locations, park rangers describe the history and importance of each site. A mix of video and still photographs give viewers a taste of what each park has to offer. In Philadelphia, viewers see a glimpse of the city's 20 historical blocks and are able to see the chair George Washington sat in during the Constitutional Convention and the silver inkwell that was used during the signing of the Declaration of Independence. In Gettysburg, still shots highlight some of the weapons, musical instruments, uniforms, and artifacts from one of the Civil War's most important battles. VERDICT This production provides a balanced overview of urban, mountainous, and rural Pennsylvania parks and encourages viewers to visit each site in person. It will be especially helpful as a field trip introduction or to supplement social studies curriculum.-Anne Bozievich, Friendship Elementary School, Glen Rock, PA © Copyright 2016.
